HB 5700: An Act Increasing The Rate Of The Sales And Use Taxes On Ammunition

Gun violence is an epidemic. It's the second leading cause of death for children and teens and mass shootings are becoming a daily occurrence. Thus, I have introduced HB 5700, An Act Increasing the Sales and Use Taxes on Ammunition.

This legislation follows the same logic as taxing cigarettes. Gun violence is a public health crisis and by raising the tax on ammunition, the goal is to curb use, to reduce gun violence, and ultimately, to save lives. In the case of cigarettes, raising taxes has been overwhelmingly effective in curbing use. It's been shown that small tax increases do not have as big an impact as big tax increases.

I received a lot of feedback on HB 5700. Not surprisingly, most of the people inside Connecticut have been supportive or offered constructive feedback.

Connecticut has been a leader in preventing and addressing gun violence. We must continue this leadership.
